I definitely knew I wanted to do this piece for the New Year, since I really enjoy everything to do with the zodiac, astrology, numerology, tarot etc….

But I was really unsure of what the actual subject of my piece would be, and when I find myself struggling with a concept, one way for me to work through it is by drawing in my comfort zone. For me, that would be mermaids. So that is what the subject of my initial rough drafts were, but this changed once I read up more on the actually traditions and celebration of the Chinese New Year. It is really fascinating stuff to read, and I would encourage you to check out this site HERE, since it had a lot of info to springboard you into further reading.

So let me talk a bit about the year of the Pig! If you were born in the years such as 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, and now 2019–you are the Chinese zodiac of the Pig. Each year for the Chinese Zodiac is also associated with a certain metal or element which will affect the attributes of that sign for the year. An example of this is say those born in the year 2007, you would be a fire pig. 2019 is the year of the earth pig, which these pigs are characterized as being very good with social interactions and luck later in life. The other year that shares this element is 1959.

Overall, Pigs are very honest, pure of heart, good-tempered, loyal, and gentle. With everything though there must be a balance, so some of the struggles for those born under the sign of the Pig are a short-temper, materialism, hesitation, being sluggish or lacking action, and some naivety. As for your best compatibilities with other Chinese signs, you guys get along really well with those who are Tigers or Rabbits. Pigs are least compatible with those that are Snakes or Monkeys.

Year of the Pig

As far as what you could expect from this year if you are a pig– it sounds like you guys will have a lot of ups and downs throughout the year. You will have moments with a lot of stress or frustration, especially at work. So try to avoid any major conflicts in those areas. It overall sounds like a year to really hunker down and keep chugging forward even when it’s challenging, because 2020 will be the time for you guys to really see the results of your hard work this year. In all of this, also remember to go have fun. Earth pigs are all about social gatherings, which means going to social events throughout the year will be very beneficial for you. It won’t all be downs, and there will definitely be some good luck in 2019.

Those are just some quick things that I learned about this sign during my research. 🙂

YouTube Video

Another fun thing I did for this piece was record most of the process, so if you would like to see how I worked on this piece, please do watch the video.

As I mentioned in the video, this piece will be available as prints HERE.
